The giving of boxer shorts for Christmas...people just don't get that...

When we all get together for birthdays (a family with two music teacher parents) we begin singing and hold the "Haaaaa-" of "happy" while the candles are being lit. Some go to the higher octave, some lower and we just stand around the table singing "Haaaaa" until the last candle is lit, then sing the song. No idea how that started.
