The Challenge was to write a short fifty word fairy tale that begins:
Once upon a time...
And ends .....happily ever after.
As promised the three best Fifty Word Stories, has chosen by me, are included in the extended post. Please understand that it was difficult, very difficult, to choose only three. There were more than three that deserve to be finalists, yet, I said three, and so, I chose three. Please also know, that I understand and appreciate how difficult it was to write a mini fairy tale with such a limited number of words. I know. I tried. In fact my entry was included in the comments of the original post. In case you are curious, I am Toast Girl, so named because I knew that I was toast with the level of creativity expressed by some of my blog-friends.
Thank-you to every single person who submitted a story. What a delightful reading experience you provided. As mentioned, I know it was difficult, which is why I will repeat this feature very soon.
Please do take a moment to read the three fifty word fairy-tales of the finalists and vote for your favourite. The winner will choose next Tuesday's Site of the Day. Voting will close Friday at midnight (EST). Yes, I will be contacting the "winner" sometime after that.
Please go read. Now. Then please vote. Now.
The Three Finalists
MissMeliss
Once upon a time, a little girl discovered that loneliness was banished by a vivid imagination. She grew up, fell in love with the written word, married a man who encouraged her, and turned her childhood fantasies into characters in books. You know the rest: they lived happily ever after.
Bluegrass Mama
Once upon a time there lived a princess who longed to slay dragons. Her parents said "No," but her fairy godmother got her a horse, a sword and secret fighting lessons. She slayed the dragon, rescued the prince, and married him to her sister. They all lived happily ever after.
Keith
Once upon a time there lived three unfamous dwarfs, Happily, Ever, and After. They were kicked out of the more famous dwarfs' house after a scandalous event that led to years of therapy for Pinnochio. Anyway, they moved into three neighboring houses and lived that way, Happily, Ever, After.
ooh, three EXCELLENT choices!
I think, though, I would most like to live Bluegrass Mama's fairy tale. So that's my vote.

I vote for Bluegrass Mama. Because I'm all about rescuing a man and then marrying him off to someone else! And the dragon slaying would be fun too!

All three are awesome, but, being a booky person, I'll vote for MissMeliss.

I love all three, but I'm going to vote for Bluegrass Mama.

All three are good, but Keith gets my vote for being that little bit extra different.

It is hard...
I vote for Miss Meliss, because there is explicit falling in love involved.

Wow, I've never been a finalist for anything before! I assume I can vote, especially since I'm not voting for mine. I vote for Keith, since his made me laugh out loud.
I'd have said "infamous," though.

Oh, I love Bluegrass Mama's story, especially the sneaky fairy godmother, don't we all wish we had one of those? That gets my vote.

Wow, I just saw this - I'm honored to be in such company.
I have to vote for Keith, though - his quirky interpretation appeals to my sense of humor.

I vote for Bluegrass Mama...who doesn't want to be able to slay the dragons, rescuse a man and marry him to someone else? That and the fact that she can take care of herself wins my vote!
Posted by: Lisa | September 13, 2007 at 06:26 PM
I'm bookish too, so I vote for Miss Meliss.
All three are very good!

I have to vote for Blue Grass Mama, not just because I hope she is marrying the prince off to me but because I liked her story best. Keith was a close second, but I have always been a sucker for princess and prince stories.

I'll vote for Bluegrass Mama. They were all good but she mentions a horse!!
Posted by: Rachel | September 14, 2007 at 07:55 PM
I vote for Bluegrass Mama. Smart cookie to marry the prince off to an unsuspecting relative. Anyone raised as a privileged prince would most likely be a terrible spouse, no? I mean, who would he expect to pick up his socks?
